Brow-lift, forehead lift

Introduction

Forehead wrinkles, wrinkles between the eyebrows and dropping eyebrow are formed as a result of the face ageing. However they can be formed by the excessive activity of mimic muscles, genetically or by the age as well. A person can seem tired, sad or even angry, this appearance can remain permanent for some people. Brow lift or forehead lift helps to reduce these ageing marks in the area of eyebrow and forehead.

What is brow-lift and forehead lift (cosmetic surgery of the eyebrow and forehead)? Why is it performed?

Brow-lift and forehead lift are cosmetic surgeries of the ageing face, performed in order to correct low position of the eyebrow and to tighten the forehead and soften deep wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyebrows. The aim of the surgery is to provide a younger appearance of the face. Especially after the brow-lift, the face will appear more fresh and relaxed. However the surgery can not stop the ageing process, neither the radical change of the face appearance is done.

What can you expect from the cosmetic surgery of the forehead and eyebrows (brow-lift, forehead-lift)?

With the help of these surgeries, it is possible to reduce horizontal wrinkles on the forehead and to improve the transverse wrinkles between eyebrows, above the nasal root and to correct descending eyebrow which can protrude over eyelids and worsen the skin drop of eyelids. Many patients who are suitable for this exact surgery, visit the plastic surgeon due to annoying skin folds in the area of upper eyelids. The eyelid correction itself would not be sufficient in these cases on the contrary it could lead to further eyebrow dropping and paradoxically worsen the situation.

Is it appropriate to combine the surgery with other surgeries?

Yes, especially as it was mentioned before, it is appropriate to combine this surgery with the correction of the upper and often lower eyelids as well. Because the ageing process does not affect only the area around eyes, but the whole face, it is often appropriate to combine the surgery of the forehead and eyebrows with the cosmetic surgery of the face (face-lift) in order to achieve the overall „face rejuvenation“. Surgeries can be performed in more steps or all at the same time.

What is the most suitable age for the cosmetic surgery of eyebrows and forehead (brow-lift, forehead-lift)?

The most often age when surgery is performed is about 50-55 years. The ideal age for the surgery varies from patient to patient. Depending mostly on the extent of an alteration.

Who are ideal candidates for the cosmetic surgery of eyebrow and forehead (brow-lift, forehead lift)?

Ideal candidates are adult women and men as well, with certain and realistic requirements and pictures about the change they want to achieve by a potential surgery. Before the surgery they should be healthy. If you decide to undergo the surgery, you should not suffer from any chronic life-threatening illness or from an acute illness month before the planned surgery. Patients with the positive life attitude tend to tolerate the surgery and recovery period better and they are more satisfied as well. Smokers suffer from higher incidence of complications and they can suffer from the healing disorders more than non-smokers.

General or local anaesthesia?

Minor surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia however general anaesthesia is more common and appropriate.

Where are scars located after the brow-lift?

Surgery can be performed via several small incisions in the hairy part of the crown and in the temporal area or one larger incision between pinnas (so-called coronal incision – forehead-lift). If the aim of the surgery is to make the forehead lower, the incision can be made along the hairline on the forehead. Then the scar is visible indeed, so it is advisable to cover it by hair.

What is the procedure of the surgery like?

Before the surgery starts, the operating field is disinfected and gauze pads are placed around it. According to the type of the surgery which depends on the extent of alteration, several small longitudinal incisions are made in the hairy part or one coronal incision is made from one pinna to another one. Skin and the soft tissues of the forehead are lifted from the scull in the required extent, by using special equipments, possibly by using endoscope (special optical device). The skin with eyebrows is then lifted in the required direction, reduced and fixed. Drains are usually inserted into the wound and surgical wounds are sutured. To suture the wound we can use special surgical staples which can be removed easier in the hairy part of the head.

What is the procedure of the post-brow-lift treatment like?

It is advisable to wear the compression elastic bandage after the surgery for several days up to weeks. Elastic compression helps to prevent the swelling expansion and haematoma, it provides the support for healing tissues as well. The sutures are removed in 1-2 weeks. If surgical staples were used in the hairy part of the head, they are removed after the same period as the sutures. Drains are usually removed in 2 days, but can stay longer according to the healing pattern and the amount of secretions. The swelling after surgery subsides completely in 2-3 months time, after this period it is possible to resume all activities.
